The update proceedure goes all the way thru and at the last minute tells me
it failed to update. I have tried everything on this site and been to places
I have never been before, I am an older female citizen so if anyone can help
please dont be too technical. I have checked the system files, and
certificates one was no good but there was another one of the same name etc
that was OK. I just tried the process from PABear in the istallation failure
? I got an error 126 message "The specified module could not be found" I
could not chang the status to "start" in the Background intelligence transfer
service. I hope someone can help me get my automatic updates.

Thankyou for responding so quick, but I'm afraid nothing has worked so far. I
have read thru other posts and tried other things . In the review of update
history, I clicked on the rred button and with all of the failures, I get the
error message number 0x80246008 so what does that mean?...nansatrier

It basically means:
Failed to create the IBackgroundCopyManager interface to BITS. The BITS service may have been
disabled

See if this article is now more relevant to your situation:
You may receive an error message that contains the "0x8DDD0018" code or the "0x80246008" code when
you try to download updates from the Microsoft Windows Update Web site or from the Microsoft Update
Web site
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;910337

If that doesn't work, you may need to reinstall BITS:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en
Update for Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) 2.0 and WinHTTP 5.1 (KB842773)
Note: This download is available to customers running genuine Microsoft Windows

Thanks but no joy here yet- could not find anything in the first link so I
did the download thing for my windows XP home and the final message was
"Service pack version of this system is newer than the update. No need to
install. Do you think I need to reinstall the BITS.??

Okay, this might explain something. Could you please advise me as to exact
the name of the folder and it's path that you deleted or copy and paste the
solution you used into this thread and I'll look at it later when I'm home.
