What location do you download the selected driver updates to, if you are
not entirely sure where it should go?

Download them wherever you wish.
Typically I download to a folder on my desktop specifically for such a
purpose..

Also it is best to get drivers directly from the hardware manufacturer and
not from Microsoft.
