Download but not Installing

I recently has to reinstall windows so I have lots of windows updates to do.
I have downloaded all of them but I can not get any of them to install. I
have tried to do it one at a time in the custom mode and that does not work
either. Every time I try it it says that I have downloaded the updates but
the installation has failed but it does not give me an error number. Any
suggestions on what to do?

Why did you reinstall Windows? Assuming WinXP:

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft
Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you repair a Windows XP
