Download Fails

Whenever I go to Windows update, it scans and finds the needed updates with
no problem. But when I go to download them it brings up the status bar
window and says preparing to download, then it sits there till the update
fails. What causes this and how do I fix it?

Thanks
Eric

1. See the "Need more help? Tell us what problem you are having" section of
http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=ph;en-us;6527

2. You cannot install some updates or programs
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;822798

3a. Check Windowsupdate.log (%windir%\Windowsupdate.log) for errors
associated with the download/install.

How to read the Windowsupdate.log file:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=902093

3b. Compare errors to those listed here:
http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/archive...date_codes.htm and/or go to
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com > click on Help and Support link in left
pane > Solve problems on your own.

4. Windows Update Checklist:

I've gone through all of the FAQ and support center stuff on their website.
I even contacted Microsoft and told them the problem and I got an email back
saying that they would forward my case to the "tech professionals"..then they
contacted me and said something about SP2 being beta and they couldn't help
me. I don't even have SP2- I'm using XP Pro x64. Hopefully someone can help
me cuz microsoft isn't being much help.

Does Windowsupdate.log show any errors regarding the download?

Try temporarily disabling both your anti-virus application and third-party
firewall: Be careful!

Checking for Hijackware which may be interfering:

When all else fails, HijackThis v1.99.1
(http://aumha.net/downloads/hijackthis.zip) is the preferred tool to use.
It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware. **Post
