Recently, every time I try to open a file from any website in IE, the File
Download "box" pops up, saying "the file you are downloading cannot be opened
by the default program. It is either corrupted or it has an incorrect file
type..."
I then only have the option to save the files. I do not want to save them -
just open them.

This just started happening - I can download the same things thru AOL just
fine.
What is causing this in Windows Vista ?

No doubt you have made the AOL browser the default browser

Shedding some light on what problem? Because you are posting from a website
that purports to be a "forum" but is actually a web interface that scrapes
Usenet posts, none of the rest of us who use real newsreaders can see any
of your previous posts in the thread, particularly if the original post is
more than a few days old.

Set up a newsreader to access Usenet. This is very easy to do. Then post
back with a full description of your computer and the problem per the "How
to Post" section below.

Since you are using a web interface, you may not realize that this is really
a newsgroup. You will get far more out of this resource if you learn to use
a newsreader. There are many good newsreaders for Windows, but you can use
Outlook Express (XP) or Windows Mail (Vista) since you already have it.
Here are some links to information about newsgroups:
