download.trojan after XP updates

we installed a number of XP security updates this morning. minutes later
Norton popped up indicating infection with download.trojan. Now we can't get
rid of it. we have tried restoring to a previous checkpoint & deleting all of
the just-installed updates, running virus scan a number of times both in
regular and safe modes, with automatic restore turned on and turned off, only
to have the Norton alert come back as soon as internet explorer is opened.
Any ideas what to do?

This exact same thing happened to me. I have discoverd the security disabler
called prutict by a company called PTech is the problem. I have done
everything to get rid of it and have been unsuccessful. It has disabled the
windows firewall/internet connection sharing service so i cannot use any
firewall and this is killing me. Norton can find it but cannot get rid of
it. Microsoft Antispyware finds it, and even says it is removed but if you
check immediately after removing it, it is still there.

1) Disable System Restore
http://vil.nai.com/vil/SystemHelpDoc...SysRestore.htm
2) Reboot your PC into Safe Mode and shutdown as many applications as possible
3) Using your AV software, perform a Full Scan of your platform and clean/delete any
infectors found
4) Restart your PC and perform a "final" Full Scan of your platform
5) Re-enable System Restore and re-apply any System Restore preferences,
(e.g. HD space to use suggested 200 ~ 400MB),
7) Reboot your PC.
6) Ctreate a new Restore point

* * * Please report back your results * * *

We ran 4 scans this morning prior to posting the message - 2 each in safe
mode and normal. Only the first scan detected the trojan. we quarantined and
deleted it at that time. System restore had been disabled and re-enabled as
well.
