I just downloaded an .exe file fromt the internet and saved it to m
harddrive. But I must've done something wrong in the process becaus
when I check the location I saved it to, it shows a shortcut (.lnk) tha
won't do a thing if I double click on it.

Is there a way to change the extension back to .exe so I can run i
(it's an install program)? I've already scouted the forums and notice
you can do something with your regs, but I'm afraid that will affec
other files on my computer and I'm only having problems with thi
particular file.

Thanks in advance

You don't say what the executable file is supposed to be, but if it is a
large file OR the site wants you to download an even bigger file, then
having a link would be correct.

To change the extension from LNK to EXE you can click the file once (to
highlight it) and then click once again about a second later. This will
highlight the name itself. Once that is done you can change the file
name/extension to anything you wish. Just be aware that if this is
spyware or something horrid like that you could be endangering your
computer.

Have you scanned the lnk/exe file with your antivirus yet?

I've already tried renaming the file to "something.exe", but tha
didn't solve my problem.

I'm fairly sure it is supposed to be an .exe file, since that's what i
states on the download page. Also, it's aprox. 1 GB in size. It's a fre
game downloaded from the developer's website, so I'm also sure it isn'
malicious software, but thanks for the heads up.

For some additional info, I believe I did something wrong when I chos
'save as'. When I downloaded the file and wanted to specify the folde
to save it to, I believe I must've clicked on a shortcut on my deskto
(in the 'save as' window), before I continued to specify the desire
location on my harddrive. I believe that somehow I changed the file nam
and the extension that way..

The game's Savage 2.
'Savage 2: A Tortured Soul Client - Big Download
(http://www.bigdownload.com/games/sav...d-soul-client/
That's where I downloaded my file (I was redirected there from thei
official site). Yet I still doubt the problem lies there. Tomorrow whe
I have time, I'll try downloading a random small file, doing differen
things when I choose 'save as'. I'll post anything I find here.

Thanks for looking into this guys

(Sorry for double post

Ok, so I quickly downloaded something before I went to sleep, turns ou
I found what the problem is.

When I download an .exe file, I choose 'save as' to save it to m
hardrive. I usually navigate to my desired folder starting from m
desktop (so I click desktop on the left and it show me every file
map,... on my desktop). Now instead of choosing a map, I click (ONCE) o
a shortcut that's on my desktop first (google desktop when I tried). Th
name changes into 'google desktop', but there's no hint that the fil
type is changed or anything. I navigate to my desired folder, pres
save, let it download and then check the map.
I see an item named 'google desktop', which is a shortcut (ln
extension), doesn't do anything when I double click on it and has th
EXACT same size as the file I downloaded (proving that it is the sam
file)

Now that's the problem, only need to find a solution for it now. I'
sorry if I put too much detail in this post, I just wanted to be a
clear as possible

Whatever the Google app (Google desktop?) is that you have installed with IE
it is interfering with the download. I just tried the download here and the
file has the correct name and extension. Try disabling the IE add-ons to get
a new uncorrupted download. Or you could install a download accelerator,
like FlashGet, to manage your downloads. Lets you restart paused or
interrupted downloads too.. useful for large files like this.

If during a download (or other save operation) you click on a file name in
the file pane of the dialog, the save-as name gets changed to the file you
clicked on. If you try to save in the same directory, a message comes up
asking if you want to replace the old file. If you accept that, the old
file gets replaced and the new file has the wrong name. If (as you say you
did) you navigate further before saving, the new file is saved with the
erroneous name.

I know this well, mostly because I've done it a million times :-)

(btw, I'm using internet explorer
The name does indeed change every time you click on a different fil
name, but the main problem is that if you click on a shortcut, not onl
does the name of your file change, but also the extension, making you
file useless after a download! (which is particulary annoying after
large download)

Anyway, it seems there's not much I can do, so I'll just download th
file again.

Thanks for all your help everyone
And a warning to you all, don't click shortcuts when doing a 'save-as
;-

Cheers, Jor
