I'm going to be configuring a new workstation that will arrive pre-
loaded with Windows XP Pro Service Pack 2, and want to make sure it
isn't attacked as soon as I go online with it.

My first stop will be Windows Update, but I'm wondering: is there a
way I could download the complete collection of critical patches
issued after Service Pack 2, and have them burned to CD and ready to
install BEFORE hooking up the new computer to the Internet? Or can
this collection of post SP2 patches only be had by connecting the new
computer to Windows Update?

You can also download individual updates from the Catalog and save to be installed later.
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.co...en/default.asp

Click Add button for each update you want to download. Once you have what you want, Click
the "Go To Download Basket" link. Type in or browse to the location where you want the
updates saved to and then Click the "Download Now" button.
Once downloaded, you can then burn them to CD.

For security and other patches released for a given month :
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sec.../ms##-***.mspx
Replace ## with the two-digit year
Replace *** with the three character month abbreviation

Providing there are releases for that month, you will see the list of "critical"
"important" patches for that month
Check on the 2nd Tuesday of each month - later in the day.

It isn't those updates you need so much as a good, up to date Antivirus
software running, plus at least a software firewall such as ZoneAlarm which
can still be gotten free.
With those, you should be fine to go ahead and complete downloading the
rest of the post-SP2 updates.

Also, yes, you CAN download the updates separately, but be aware there are
quite a few of them. Go to windows update, then to the Catalogs. There you
can download the separate updates. Be careful: Sometimes some have to be
installed before other ones, so sequences can be important.

On the Windows Update main page you will see a menu at the top with 'windows
catalog'. This has the 'downloadable for later' versions of all updates.
