The general advice in this newsgroup is to only download device drivers
from the manufactures web site.

Unfortunately users of Onecare from Microsoft are not allowed to do this.
Onecare will download device drivers immediately without asking the user
thus making it impossible not to dowload it first.

OneCare is terrible, terrible software, with an uninstall-on-site status
among technicians I know, including myself. My philosophy on this is:
if a user is novice to the point of using OneCare, they have no business
installing device drivers on their own anyway. OneCare is built on the
emerging Microsoft trend of taking control out of the user's hands, and
giving it to Microsoft software. It's a trend that is not popular among
the IT community that I associate with.

While I think that's good advice, I also think it's a carryover from
the days of XP when gettiing those updates from Windows Update could
be disastrous.

I accidentally permitted a driver installation on this machine after I
installed Vista and had no such disaster.
