Downloading a file, but don't want it to automatically install

It would seem that whenever I download an executable ... windows goes
ballistic and starts installing the file. I have a file that I've tried to
download about 5 times. It goes into automatically install, so the file
disappears when that happens. I've never run into this "ever" with other op
sys'.

How can I stop that behaviour. This must be an option somewhere, right?

I'm definitely selecting save, instead of "run". I have to cancel the
installation process about 15 seconds after the download starts and have to
cancel about 5 times. Vista is going wild with the install function.

Insights ... please, please and thanks!

Additional,
I hope someone out there has experienced this same problem.

On this same file, I've downloaded several times ... it keeps disappearing
from the directory I send it to. I don't know how to beat it. I don't have
A/V software and that's what this file is. However, I don't want it to
automatically install. I have to setup another pc and want this file. I
want to make sure it downloads properly first, then I'll run it.
Thanks.

After a lot of other things got fixed ... this seems to have been fixed in
the process. I'm not sure how but I can now download with success. All
good (well ... good with downloads at least!).
