Downloading files from the internet

While downloading files using windows vista I frequently have issues
downloading files moderate to large size. The files download up to a certain
percentage then, simply stay there no matter how long I wait. I cant give
to many details on the systems im working on because they are systems from
all venders; Dell, hp, sony, acer, emachines, gateway. The systems primarily
are runing Vista Basic and Vista Home Premium. The files that are being
downloaded are from many different websites, Could be from iTunes, patches
from game websites, software download for air cards, from Sprint, Verizon,
and At&t. Any idea as to what causes this issue would appreciated.
