Downloading takes forever and nothing happens

In the 'Installing Updates' window, while the downloads are being downloaded
and installed, the 'Downloading Security Update for Windows XP (KB896423)
(update 1 of 1)... ' takes forever and nothing happens. This happens for any
download that I have tried so far (kb896423 is just an example). It starts
the download, but it is never done, nor does the download installs.

My OS is XP. I don't know if I have SP1, but I don't think so.
My 'System Restore' is off.

I don't know what is going on, since the updates used to work before.

To check what if any Service Pack is installed:
Right click My Computer and click Properties.
The installed Service Pack is listed on the last line under System.
If you do not have SP-2, you should install that first:
