Downloading updates: 0%

I just got finish manually installing two recent updates from the Windows
Update website, and when I restarted the computer, I noticed that the
Automatic Update icon popped up on the tray, saying Downloading updates: 0%.
Now, before I installed the updates, the AU icon would pop up occassionally,
and the last time I saw it, it was on 44%. Does this mean it's restarting the
download again? It's strange, because I only thought the icon permanently
appeared when you had set a certain time for downloading and installing
updates, but I still have it on download updates, but let me choose when to
install.

Thanks for any help.

Hi

In Control Panel/Automatic Updates, turn AU off if it is on, do a
reboot, and then turn AU on again and see if that helps.

If that doesn't help (or AU was off), try this:

Clean out the Download folder (WU5's temporary download folder)
located here:

%windir%\SoftwareDistribution\

(%windir% is typically C:\Windows)

You can use the procedure described here:

http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.co...cleid=11&ln=en

You might need to delete the DataStore folder mentioned in the link
above, as well as the EventCache folder.

Note that a side effect of deleting the DataStore folder is that you
lose your WU v5 History listing (not critical).

If the problem repeat itself later on, try the steps here as well:

http://groups.google.com/groups?selm...tngp13.phx.gbl

If it is SP2 you want to install, I suggest you use the full SP2
installer instead of Windows Update to install SP2.

SP2 is available at the Microsoft Download Center
(standalone "network" version, 266 MB):

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...5-9e368d3cdb5a

(disregard the "intended for IT professionals and developers" part,
it can be used on a single computer as well)

If you do not have broadband at home, but you have at work or you have
friends that have it, you can download it there and burn it to a CD.

If you think that the download is to large, you can get the same file
on a CD from Microsoft (a lot of computer magazines currently also
have the CD included).

The Windows XP SP2 CD order point:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/d...s/default.mspx

For folders you can consider deleting and other disk cleanup tips
after a successful SP2 installation, take a look here:

http://groups.google.com/groups?selm...TNGP15.phx.gbl

Before installing SP2, you should take a look at the
following sites:

What to Know Before You Download and Install Windows XP Service Pack 2
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/s...hattoknow.mspx

How to successfully install Windows XP Service Pack 2.
http://www.fixyourwindows.com/winxpsp2install.htm

Service Pack Installation Checklist
http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/spackins.htm

Please take a look at this Microsoft knowledge base article as well:

Windows XP Service Pack 2 is not available to install from Windows
Update and is not offered by Automatic Updates
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=885627

*Important* part from the link above:

If you have T.V. Media from Total Velocity Corporation installed, or
your processor is a Intel P4 Prescott with C-0 stepping, you should
not install SP2.

Intel P4 Prescott processors came out February 2004, so if your
computer is older than that, this is not an issue for you. Also, if
you have a Dell, IBM or HP, this is not an issue.

If you suspect/know you have an Intel P4 Prescott processor, take a
look at the two following Web sites for what you need to do/have to
be able to install SP2 on the computer:

http://forum.aumha.org/viewtopic.php?t=7447
http://cquirke.mvps.org/sp2intel.htm

Newsflash:

Microsoft have now released a fix for the problem where SP2 fails to
boot after installing it in a PC with the Prescott or a Celeron D CPU
(or fails to install in the case of slipstreamed cds). The problem is
described here:

http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=34535

and the download for the fix is available here (install it before you
install SP2):

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en

Also, if you have a Dell Dell Inspiron 1150 or 2650, you might get a
slow running system after installing SP2, take a look at this thread
for more on this:

You keep posting the below as a fix and the article is intended for hangs at "Scanning for updates" when visiting the windows update site.

These users and myself are NOT having the above problem.

What has been stated is .... user visits Windows Update and installs suggested updates, bypassing on SP2.

From that point on users receive WAU icon in system tray and status when hover over it with mouse says:

Downloading updates: 0%

If you have a fix for this I'd be REAL interested.

I have a case opened with Microsoft Premiere on this and they've been working aggressively on it for over a week now. This is a BIG deal by the way.

It solves the problem in some cases, so in my view it is worth a try.

Here is a an example where it worked:

Yes, I agree, it is a big deal, so let's hope MS Premiere Support
can find an solution for your problem, and in that case, please
post it here :-)

Well, as it turned out, the icon disappeared before I ever got the chance to
read these replies, so I suppose everything is back to normal. I can't be
sure, because so far, the icon hasn't popped up again to resume where it left
off, but we'll see.

Thanks for the suggestions, though. I'll keep them in mind if it turns out
there's still a problem.

Details seem sparse. If user is bypassing XPsp2 what do they have?
WUV4 or WUV5? 842773?

Check with Task Manager. Is wuauclt.exe running in Processes?

If so you could have the opposite symptom that I had but perhaps
due to the same cause. (In my case wuauclt.exe didn't seem to be
working properly at all after upgrading XPsp2RC2 to XPsp2RTM.)

After following one of Torgeir's suggestions to clean up the
DistributedSoftware subdirectories AU started working properly
again (according to the log and according to the files that are being
downloaded into that directory.) AU is still not offering anything but
XPsp2 on my XPsp1 partition but that's a server issue not a client
issue so there's nothing more that I can do about that but wait for the
server to change.

Well, it popped up again on restart, so I may end up trying the suggested
solution, but I think I'm going to wait and see what it does first. I don't
even want SP2, so it's not a major thing at the moment.

FYI: I use WU5, and yes, wuauclt.exe is in the task manager.

I went through all the "SoftwareDistribution" folder clean up several days ago per Microsoft Premiere support process. It got rid of the icon .... BUT ... WAU is still not working ... I haven't received notification of SP2 and I also have not received notification of the recent September critical security update that was released.

I am running the new WAU client too as evidenced by the changed GUI for the Automatic Updates [tab] in System Properties.

As long as you have cleaned up your log in terms of error messages
I would say that you're just waiting for the server to do something useful
for you.

FWIW I have been monitoring SoftwareDistribution with FileMon
(and highlighting WRITE) and it is clear that periodically wuauclt.exe
comes alive, checks with the server and then disappears again.
Once it is given something to do I'll find out whether it is really working
or not.

BTW I have figured out a "Windows way" of getting a list of what
it does too: use Search Companion (Win-F) to search for all files
in %windir%\SoftwareDistribution modified today; then sort the list
by Date Modified. (Alt-V,I,M) This method also makes it easy
to see what is in any .cab files that were downloaded.
