I am having issues updating machines running windows XP pro with SP2 with
windows update. I select the option for express and then select critical
updates and patches. I get to the point where it says "installing updates"
and below it has a box that says "instalation status" and another box that
says " preparing for download" which never shows any progress. Invariably all
of the updates fail one by one.

I am logged onto the machine as local administrator and can browse the web
with no issues. I have the windows update servers listed in the trusted
sites. The worst thing is that it was working a few days ago on many machines
and now it is not. I had issues before and they mysteriously went away and
now they have reappeared. I am convinced that there are changes happening on
the WU site that are causing this type of behavior as I am not making changes
to my network.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

We are having the exact problem. Are you in an Active Directory
environment? I have narrowed the problem down to that. Spent about an hour
and a half on the phone with MS, and they had no clue. Check your services.
The BITS on my computers will not start... at all. Errors out. If machine
is not on domain, everything works great. I'm guessing it must be a global
policy that is doing it, I just cant figure out which one. Any one have any
ideas?
