Downloading updates for later install...

Hello everyone,

I'd like to know how to download WinXP_Pro updates and save these updates to
my hard drive, CD-R, DVD-R or DVD+R for a later install. The reason I'd
like to do this is to speed up the re-installation of WinXP_Pro with the
updates if ever I can't repair WinXP_Pro and needed to do a re-install. I
have dial-up internet connection and it's extremely slow. I've used a DSL
internet connection which is better but still I am wondering if it will be
faster if the WinXP_Pro updates are on my hard drive or some other media.

The only way I know of updating the update files for WinXP_Pro for later
download is the following:

Open IE 6.x, click on Tools, Window Update (which brings me to the Microsoft
Windows Update webpage http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp)
Here I can click on "Scan for Updates" which takes a moment to scan my
computer for the needed updates. I then can click on "Review and install
updates" which then brings me to a screen where I can remove the updates
that I don't want to install but more importantly I can click on the
"INSTALL NOW" button which downloads the updates to (I guess) some temporary
folder and runs the setup for the install automatically without giving me
the option to save it to a folder on the hard drive for later install.

Now I could click on the "PERSONALIZE WINDOWS UPDATE" link on the left side
of the Microsoft Windows Update webpage
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp) under the heading
"Windows Update, Other Options". Once doing so I am brought to a page where
I can select "Display the link to the Windows Update Catalog" and click
on the button called "Save Settings". What this does is it gives me an
extra
option called "Windows Update Catalog" (under the heading "Windows Update",
"See Also").

Here is where I can search for updates (I choose the type of operating
system (OS) I was using
"Windows XP Professional SP1", the Language "English" and used the default
search
settings under "Advanced Search Options") I want to download and install
later.
This search does not give the same search
results as the "Scan for Updates" search results (see above). In fact it
give fewer critical updates for the installed OS than the "Scan for Updates"
search results.

I could use the "Scan for Updates" search, do the automatic
download and installation of the updates and then "View installation
history",
write down what updates were installed, then do a individual search for each
update. That is too time consuming especially when I maintain several
computers and update the hardware on these computers constantly.

The real solution (if there is one) would be to use the "Scan for Updates"
options and at the point where the computer downloads and installs the
updates there should also be an option to save these updates for later
installation instead of automatically installing the updates now. Maybe I
can find out what temporary download folder "Scan for Updates" uses on my
hard drive and copy these downloaded update files to another permanent
folder and thus be able to run these updates at a later time, if this can be
done at all. Anyone know and is this the best solution?

I have read/heard in instances of automatic installations that
do the following: downloads the install files, installs the update/program
then deletes itself all in one step so a person has difficulty re-installing
the update/program except to go back to the web page and download the
update/program again for another automatic install. Am I right about this?
Anyone have any idea/s how to solve my dilemma?

Thanks to all who can help,

Ismael

Hello,
The Windows Update Catalog does allow you to save to a local folder on your system. It asks you for save location.
Take another look at it.

Seeing that you have XP, I would suggest you wait for the release of Service Pack 2, then obtain the full install package, and save it to CD. I am suggesting that because (a) it should be out soon, (b) it beats the heck out of saving umpteen dozen separate updates.

After SP2, you can still use Windows Update Catalog to get post-SP2 updates.

Another MS location is the MS Download Center where you can also search for & find specific fixes or updates.
The link is http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/

The ideal way to save your OS (once you have a clean & working setup) is to get image files on CD or DVD.
A lot of people use 3rd party programs, like BootItNG or Drive Image, to get a mirror of their system onto offline media.
Then if the absolute worst happens, you use the utilities to restore back to your hard drive.

Are you referring to Ismael's post ? Where did you look?
This link is for the Download Center's Help Page
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/help.aspx

The main page for Download Center is
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/search.aspx
