Is it possible? If I leave a torrent active or am simply downloading a
large file will it continue to download even while I put it on sleep
mode?

no it is not possible since you have it a low power state meaning the
only thing pretty much on is the ram being refreshed so that you dont
lose anything when you get back to it...

Sleep mode is just as it states. The computer is asleep - it is not active -
it is not doing anything. It is just "breathing", if you get the idea!

I never would have considered a NAS device. I would have been looking for
USB devices - as I think the O/P would have done. Actually, he may want to
download to his built in drive.

Well, OP certainly did want to download to their internal drive (impossible
under the circumstances) but the later replier seemed intrigued by the
possibility of an external device doing it. As for USB vs NAS, any device
downloading from the internet would first need full-time access to the
internet and this is not generally offered to a USB device (especially one
plugged into a sleeping PC) but will almost always be available to a NAS on
a home network. If I didn't already have a small server running 24X7
already I might also consider such a device even though the price seems a
bit high.
