Downloads of new WU are failing

I have tried downloading the following updates on my WindowsXP Pro machine
and they just fail (no other error message):

Security Update for Microsoft Data Access Components (KB832483)
D-Link Corporation - Networking - D-Link AirPlus DWL-520+ Wireless PCI
Adapter
Realtek Semiconductor Corp - Networking - Realtek RTL8139/810x Family Fast
Ethernet NIC
Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 (KB867801)

Looking at the install history the error code is 80072F78, but the info with
it doesn't help. I have tried several times without success. MS support
site seems to only have help with download/install problems when you get a
specific error message (which I don't).

When it starts downloading it pauses, then after about a minute it says
failed and moves onto the next update (not downloading a single kb). Could
this be my firewall or virus scanner? I have recently bought the new
ZoneAlarm Pro but everything else seems to work fine.

Any ideas?

You receive Initialization error 0x80072F78 while the Windows
Update Web site is loading

No, like I said Windows Update page loads up fine, I get NO error message
(anywhere) and I can select Custom Search and pick the updates I wish to
download and install (hence where I got the list of updates below).

I have, however, followed the instructions in your link, but this has no
affect. I have also shutdown ZA and tried the WU site, but the same
problem. :-(

Any other ideas? Everything was fine before I installed ZoneAlarm and/or
the new WindowsUpdate popped up last week.

If you attached your %windir%\WindowsUpdate.log file (preferably cab/zip it
first) we could take a look. Don't confuse this with the v4 log file that
has a space between Windows & Update.

I too am seeing the same problem, but don't have ZoneAlarm, I use McAfee's
firewall. I tried disabling it, but to no avail.

Hi there,

I have had a reply from MS and they have told me to try the following (sory
but it's a lot to read), I still cannot get it to work.

Let me know how you get on with this

From the information provided, I understand that you are experiencing
difficulty installing 2 hardware drivers for your system from Windows Update
Site. I appreciate your kind understanding in providing me with the exact
details regarding this issue and also the efforts that you have taken to get
this issue resolved by yourself. I realize the importance of getting this
issue resolved and look forward to providing the appropriate instructions.

For your information, the updates that you were unable to install for
Windows XP Service Pack 1 are included in Windows XP Service Pack 2 hence, I
suggest you to just do not worry about it. Also for your information, V5
Windows Update Site is the latest Windows Update Site available for Windows
XP users. In this site additional features has been added and made more
simple for you to update your system.

Based on my experience I have listed some instructions in the form of
suggestions so that it will be easier for you to follow them. The
instructions provided below are a little lengthy but I assure you that those
will definitely resolve the issue for you.

Note: Please temporarily Disable or completely Shutdown the Norton, Symantec
and the Zonelabs utilities if any installed on your system (Example: Norton
Internet Security, ZoneAlarm Firewall), as these programs conflict with
Windows Update Site and cause issues while updating. You can enable them
again once you are finished with updating your system.

Suggestion 1:
=========
This issue can occur if the Automatic Updates or BITS services is disabled
or malfunctioning. To resolve the issue we will have to enable the service
or Stop and restart the service.

1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. Type "services.msc" (Without the Double Quotes) and then click OK.
3. In the list of services, right-click on Automatic Updates and then click
Properties.
4. In the Startup type list, select Automatic and click Apply
5. Verify that the Service status is started, if the Service Status is
Stopped click on the Start Button. If the service is already started then
press Stop and then click on Start to re-set the service.

6. In the list of services, right-click on Background Intelligent Transfer
Service (BITS) and then click Properties.
7. In the Startup type list, select Automatic and click Apply
8. Verify that the Service status is started, if the Service Status is
Stopped click on the Start Button. If the service is already started then
press Stop and then click on Start to re-set the service.
9. Click OK.

Kolin, now try installing the drivers from Windows Update Site

Suggestion 2:
=========
If you are still experiencing difficulty installing updates even changing
the attributes of the Catroot2 folder then, we need to rename the Catroot2
folder after stopping the cryptographic service from your system. Once you
rename the Catroot2 folder start the cryptographic service again. We need to
do this, since this issue can occur if Catroot2 folder where windows stores
the information on who is and is not trusted to install programs on your
machine has become corrupted and unusable. To do this follow the
instructions provided below:

1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. In the Open box, type cmd, and then click OK.
3. At the command prompt, type the following commands, pressing ENTER after
each line:

Note: We need to type the commands which are in Red color while beside each
command information is provided in brackets on what exactly happen when you
run the commands

net stop cryptsvc (To stop the Cryptographic service)

ren %systemroot%\system32\catroot2 oldcatroot2 (To rename the catroot2
folder if any)

net start cryptsvc (To start the Cryptographic service again)

4. Type exit to close the command prompt

Now, try installing the failed drivers from Windows Update Site.

Your feedback is very important to us, to further enhance our support.
Please let me know whether the steps resolved your issue or not and by which
suggestion?

If you are still unable to install the hardware drivers for your system
then, please provide me with the following information to further research
your issue:

* Name and the Number of the 2 hardware drivers that you are unable to
install for your system.

* Windows Update log file(WindowsUpdate.Log). It should be located in the
C:\Windows or C:\Winnt folder. Follow the steps given below to locate
Windows Update.log

1. Click on Start
2. Click on Run
3. Type Notepad "%systemroot%\Windowsupdate.log" (Type the whole command
which is in BOLD)
4. Click on OK (This will open the Windows Update log file from your system)
5. Click on File tab on the menu bar, Save As and save the file on Desktop
with the name Windows Update and then attach it with the following email
alias

* Cabinet file by following the instructions provided below:

I would request you to download and execute Reporting tool (MPSRPT_SUS.exe)
on your system. The MPSRPT_SUS.exe tool will gather more data about the
computer to help me troubleshoot, including settings related to Windows
Update and create a cab file. Send me the file that the tool creates. This
will help me in further troubleshooting the issue and provide you with
appropriate resolution.

Please go to the site below and download MPSRPT_SUS.exe from the list of
files to download to an easy to remember location (e.g. Desktop, My
Documents, etc.) on your system:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en

If the link above gets broken up into multiple lines in email and you have
trouble locating the download, please try this alternate link that will
redirect to the longer one above:

http://tinyurl.com/an6z

Once you have downloaded MPSRPT_SUS.exe:

1. Double click on the MPSRPT_SUS.exe file to execute it (this may take a
few minutes).

Note: During the process, it will prompt you whether you want to include
system information file, click "Y" button on your keyboard.

2. Send me the resulting .cab file found in
C:\WINDOWS\MPSReports\msus\Reports\cab to me at
v-

The MPSRPT_SUS.exe tool will gather more data about the computer to help me
troubleshoot, including settings related to Windows Update. You can read
more about the tool and the data it collects in the MPSRPT_SUS_readme.txt
file.

NOTE: Please send the following to me at v- in
a NEW email (Do not reply to this message, your attachments will be lost).
