Hi

I running WSUS3.0 on Win2003 R2 machine

To surf internet all PC and server is required to access via proxy, named
proxya.abc.com

Question: How do i configure a downstream server to download the files from
Microsoft Update and not from upstream server via proxy server?

I believe is not under "Update source and proxy server" --> "Proxy server"
tab, as once i capture there, it fail replicating from upstream server

Thanks

On the Options | Update Source and Proxy Server dialog -- ensure that the
downstream server has the correct upstream server configured.

On the Options | Update Files and Languages dialog -- under the "Store
update files locally on this server" radio button, enable the checkbox for
"Download files from Microsoft Update; do not download from upstream
server".

Understand, but at the downstream server, how it able to get the update from
Microsoft Update without keying the proxy server setting?

As for now, i can see from my upstream server is show 0% replicate over to
downstream server

Thanks a lot

Well, *IF* the downstream server still needs to go through the
corporate/organizational Internet-access proxy server for Internet access,
then you'll need to configure the Options | Proxy Server Configuration
parameters -- just like you would on the upstream server.

If you want your WSUS Servers to completely bypass your proxy server (Highly
Recommended!), that's something you would have to configure at the Proxy
Server, to permit requests from the known IP Addresses (hostnames) of the
WSUS Server(s) to bypass the proxy cache.

That could be for a number of various reasons... some having absolutely
nothing to do with a proxy server. If the downstream server is not
successfully synchronizing, for example.

I believe the configured proxy server is used both when syncing the metadata
from the upstream server and when downloading the updates.

Harry.

In fact, that proxy configuration would be used for *any* outbound
communications initiated by the WSUS Server. The presumption is that the
proxy server is the only pathway, and that everything has to go through the
proxy server. Since proxy servers are usually devices on the perimeter of
the LOCAL network (as opposed to firewalls which are devices on the
perimeter of the remote network), this is a reasonable presumption.
