Ever since upgrading to SP2 on XPHome, after i boot up, the system reports an
error with dr watson and asks if i want to send a report. I say no & then
have to kill dr watson (&process tree) to get the system to run. has anyone
else seen this? this never happened pre-sp2.

"okk", "beesolo", "barbedwire",

I am very sorry that you are hitting this issue. In the shortest amount of
time, the best path here is to reinstall Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2).
You can do that in two different ways. The first is to undo the
installation by uninstall, or by system restore. The second is to simply
install SP2 again, directly, onto the machine, and see what the results are.

Option 1a
To undo the SP2 installation by taking the machine back to a point before
SP2 was installed, using System Restore:
1. As you boot the machine, press F8 to enter Safe Mode.
2. Log into the local Administrator account.
3. Click Start
4. Click Run
5. type: msconfig
6. Click OK or hit the <Enter> key.
7. When the System Configuration Utility opens, make sure you are looking at
the General tab.
8. Click the "Launch System Restore" button. This will open a wizard.
9. On the calendar in the wizard, select a date before SP2 was installed.
This will be the date before the four updates you installed.
10. Click OK through the wizard and reboot. This should bring you back to a
working and stable Windows XP, from which you can install Service Pack 2
again.

Option 1b
To undo the SP2 installation by uninstalling, you may use the Add/Remove
Programs to uninstall it. NOTICE: This option can ONLY be used if, during
installation of Service Pack 2, the user CHOSE to create a backup of the
settings, (available in the installation wizard) and has access to those
files. If he or she did not choose to create that backup, this is NOT an
option for the user. Here's how:
1. Click Start
2. Click Control Panel
3. Double-click Add/Remove Programs
4. Search for Windows XP Service Pack 2
5. Click Remove
6. Follow the prompts and confirm that you wish to remove Service Pack 2.
This will stop if there is no backup to go to.

Option 2a
Download and install Windows XP Service Pack 2 directly over the old one.
You may have a poor copy of Service Pack 2, and that may have been part of
the problem.

1. Close all Internet Explorer windows and all other Internet browser
windows.
2. Open one Internet Explorer (IE) window
3. Click on Tools
4. Click on Internet Options...
5. On the General tab, click Delete Files
6. At the new popup Delete Files window, check the Delete all offline
content and click OK
7. Click OK again to exit the Internet Options window. Leave the IE window
here for a moment.
8. Click Start
9. Click Run
10. Type: %temp% <Enter>
11. When this window opens, select all content by pressing <Ctrl>+<A>
12. Press the <Delete> key, and confirm you wish to delete all files.
13. Close this window.
14. Back at the Internet Explorer window, copy and paste the following
address into the Address field and then press <Enter>:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...5-9e368d3cdb5a
15. Click Download
16. Click Save, and choose a directory you will remember.
17. As it downloads, uncheck the "Close this dialog box when download
completes" checkbox. This will be useful to execute immediately after
download is complete.
18. When the download completes, in the dialog box, click the "Open" button
19. Follow the prompts to install Windows XP Service Pack 2.
20. Be SURE to allow the backup of your files in the wizard, so that you can
uninstall using option 1b if things do not work out. The idea here is to
maximize your options.

Option 2b
You have Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) on CD, and will now attempt to
re-install the service pack.

1. From Option 2a, follow steps 1-13. This clears the %temp% folder and the
Internet cache.
2. Insert the Windows XP Service Pack 2 CD. This is NOT to be confused with
the Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 2 that is also on CD, and
available now at your local store.
3. Run the installation, and follow the prompts.
4. From Option 2a, follow step 20.

Write us back and let us know how this goes.

Sincerely,

Pat Walters [MSFT]
