drag to select

in XP i used to drag a box to select multipe files. now in vista when i
click the mouse in windows explorer, it creates a horizontal line
highlighting the file, and all its attributes going to the right.
so when i click the mouse and drag (to get the box that selects multiple
files) instead of the box coming up, it selects that one file and drags that
one file.
i'm not sure i explained my self clearly, but if anyone knows what i'm
talking about, and can help, please do.

Point at a file till it highlights (this assumes a single-click setting in
folder options)
Now press and hold the shift key while dragging down

It sucks, don't it?

Here are my work-arounds, none really satisfy me.

1.) Go back to double-clicking (I hate double-clicking so that not an
option for me)
2.) Hover over another file, let it get selected, and then quickly move
to the first file you want to select, and quickly click and drag. (This
seems to only work about 50% of the time)
3.) Make the attribute columns small enough or few enough so that there
is a white no column area to the right of the Explorer window, and start
your drag to select from that white space. (Works best with Explorer
window maximized on a wide screen monitor)
4.) Learn to use the keyboard in combo with mouse or arrow keys [Shift
Key] (PITA)
5.) Dual boot XP for file management. (Might as well just format
Vista, and just use XP)

Yeah, that's much easier than the XP way!

Change for the sake of change blows!

Sorry Mark, don't want to take it out on you, but after file transfer
speed, and the green progress bar of death, this is my biggest
frustration with MS's Explorer "enhancements."

Yes, and you can also tell it to the current conservatives.

It still works that way on my system, though I do note that the file icons
in the Vista Explorer are a bit larger than they were on XP, or the white
space between them has been decreased. Anyway, it does work but you need to
make sure you start with no files highlighted when multi-selecting.

you are right there, but what does that have to do with anything?

Changing the subject for the sake of change stirs an ill wind as well
