Hello... I had trouble with the icons in the tray during boot..

some never showed, especially messenger....

after some googling.. I found out that if I disabled the sspd and unpnp
services
the icons in the tray would show perfectly!!! Indeed that solved the
problem.

but I am wondering if disabling the upnp will have some bad effects on live
messenger,
for example for file transfer.. it might need to open ports automatically..
or something
on my router...

or some other programs might need upnp...

some sites say this is a security risk.. but if some programs need this to
open ports
then disabling it makes you lose functionality...

any ideas? thanks

Greetings Jim,

Yes, by removing UPnP, Messenger won't be able to automatically open and forward ports for
you. Oddly, I've never even heard of this problem you're describing.

However, you can live without UPnP and things will still work in Messenger, just not very
reliably as they'll depend more on the network setup of your contacts.

thanks for your reply...

someone on another newsgroup told me that as long I as I have the routers
UPNP setting enabled then all programs that use UPNP will work...

and that the UPNP service in XP is only for UPNP hardware like network
printers for example.

Do you agree with this?
