I'd like to follow-up on a thread that TaurArian replied to back on 1/22/08.
I have been reviewing all the discussions on Error 0x8DDD0002 because I am
experiencing the same problem with a new installation of XP Pro SP2c.

TaurArian states:

1. Open windows explorer, locate c:\windows\softwaredistribution folder.
2. Right-click on the folder, choose properties. Click on the security tab.
3. Make sure Administrators and System have full control.
4. Click on the advanced button and put a checkmark in "Replace permissions
entries on..."
5. Click on the owner tab, select Administrators and check "Replace owner on
subcontainers and objects."
6. Now make sure "automatic updates" and "BITS" services are started. If
they are not started, then start them.
7. Try WU again.

What do you do if you do not have a Security tab under the properties for the
%windir%\softwaredistribution folder? All I have are General and Sharing
tabs. Is there another way to do this?

To install items from Windows Update, you must be logged on as an administrator or a

Logon as an administrator?

Otherwise, switch to a cmd window and use the cacls command.

Thanks TaurArian. The information in the KB article was able to help me get
to the Security tab. I was not joined to a domain, so I had to disable
Simple File Sharing to access it.

Unfortunately, after finally getting to the Security tab and following the
instructions in your earlier thread, I am still unable to get WU to execute.

I'll keep digging.

After following TaurArian's instructions about not my being logged into a
domain, I went back and retried the six methods listed in KB article 316524
to clear the "Administrator Only" error message. Unfortunately, I still get
the error message.

Does anyone have any other ideas on things to attempt?

Also, why are people still having this problem after all these years? I
believe I saw threads dated back as far as 2005 regarding this error.
Doesn't seem like this should still be a problem, especially for a new OS
installation on a new motherboard.
