Drive/media access annoyance.

This goes back to Windows XP also, but my current experience is with
Vista Business.

WHY when a DVD-ROM drive is attempting to read a badly written CD does
it completely freeze/lag access to Hard drives. The DVD drive is IDE,
and the Hard drives are SATA - this is very annoying.

Any reasoning or 'workarounds' would be much appreciated.

My guess would be that the upper level device driver gets tied up in waiting
for the CD-ROM drive and puts the HDD's and any other devices it is managing
on hold until its done. I'd like to see the drivers be a little more fine
grained or at least multi-threaded. Like you say... a stall on the CD Drive
shouldnt have any effect on the HDD. Just like accessing a floppy in '98
shouldnt pause the whole system
