when trying to install the Driver update for the Via Rhine II Fast ethernet
adapter from Microsoft Update on May 16,2006, I received the above error,
(Error Code: 0x800706BE.) After trying to Google it and extensive searches
on the MKB, As well as other resources, I'm at a loss. Microsoft Update
recommends trying to download the offending update again, but, doesn't give
me anywhere to do so. Any ideas as to what's going on? The other threads
are all concerning DirectX or SP2, I already Had SP2 Installed when I bought
the machine and Direct X is as up to date as I can make it. Help?

says Custom at WU, then getting the optional update works. Your comment
at the end indicates you knew this. You succeeded in wasting my time.

Thank you Mr Jennings. The Answer was helpful. The Attitude wasn't all I
really needed to know was that it was a known issue. The answer at ViaArena
didn't help much either as it was actually an optional update at Microsoft
Update that caused the problem. I've tried scanning it again and nothing
happens. As well, I didn't retreive said driver from Automatic Updates. it
was Microsoft UPdate that caused the problem. I'd appreciate some further
insight and am not trying to "Waste Your Time."

):^| What I'd do would be to get a different network interface card.

That would be easier than WU or VIA support. I'm sorry.
Your "Boo!!! Made ya look!!," sig kind of shuts my mouth.

I'd get a new NIC Card too... if the one i've got wasn't already integrated
in the Motherboard. Can you put PCI NIC cards in if you already have one
"onBoard"? I'm not sure. BTW Thanks for the Apology. It's appreciated.
So many people get all bent out of shape on these forums. Hopefully the sig
isn't to annoying I was just trying to be funny a 2AM. Bad Idea!! LOL!!!

MU is layered on top of WU. The instruction from via is to go to WU and
click the custom button. That is, Windows Update, not Microsoft Update.
I haven't tried MU yet, so I don't know how easy it is to revert to WU,
which it seems like you'd have to do in order to follow their instruction.

MU / WU has free email support, maybe from Bangalore.
In Internet Explorer Help > Online Support > (look in the left panel for)
Microsoft Update > (look way down at the bottom for)
Contact a Support Professional by Email, Online, or Phone >
Select a country > Start E-mail Request

Let's say you don't want a fun time with all that - then new NIC card.
Windows can accommodate extra NICs. If you don't want more than one,
access BIOS at boot and *disable* Onboard LAN which should be listed
in Integrated peripherals. Wait until they're both there before doing this.
