Driver not working, Windows XP

Last week, tried to rip a cd into Windows Media Player and but not cd was
found.
Prior to that, thried to burn a cd, also not successful.
This is when I soon learnt that driver is not working!
Have looked into Device Manger, and though it says its working properly, I
have since tried other discs (games, software discs) but none seem to run.
Troubleshotter 'unable to help me'.
Tried to open it myself thru RUN, but nothing there nothing seems to be
registering.
I have uninstalled Nero.
Tried rollback etc, but nothing to go 'back to'.
I am running Windows XP SP2.
LOCAL DISC Samsung SP011N
CD-ROM Drive (D) LITE-ON COMBO SOHC - 5232K
I also use AVG free edition, all up to date.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
