Driver Updates

Currently updating an older Dell - have updated graphics with latest driver
from Nvidia but windows update is insisting that I install and older driver
and lists it as a crtitcal update so hiding it presents the 'we know better
than you you do' warning that you haven't installed a critical update.

I have uninstalled all Nvidia drivers and ran a cleanup tool then installed
the latest drivers available from Nvidia yet the damn thing won't go away.

Any ideas?

An NVidia driver that is a critical update or are you visiting the hardware
section of the windows update web page?

If the latter - stop - just don't ever do that again. heh

Getting hardware drivers from the Microsoft web site *is* a crap shoot.
Usually by the time they are approved an put there - they are older than
what you would find from the manufacturer's web site. My recommendation
is - unless you have Microsoft hardware - do not visit the Windows Update
hardware drivers section - ignore it - pretend it does not exist. In fact -
even if you have Microsoft hardware - go directly to its support web page
for your drivers.

Sorry should have mentioned that - WinXP SP2. Have installed V93.71 whql
Nvidia drivers and Windows Update wants to install 52.16. This is for GeForce
4 MX420.

Wouldn't ordinarily worry but as I said it is listed as a critical update
not in the hardware section so I can't ignore it without warning messages
every time windows update is run.

Many thanks

Yes it is listed as a critical update - an Nvidia driver that is older than
what is installed. It is not listed as an optional hardware update. I can't
hide it without getting warning messages about uninstalled critical updates.

See reply to PA Bear for driver details.

Many thanks

If using Windows Update (WU) as the update source: Scan for available
updates > Uncheck the Nvidia driver update and Hide it, ignoring any
warnings > Now install any other critical *security* updates (no Optional,
Recommended or Hardware updates) offered.

If using Automatic Updates (AU) as the update source: Control Panel >
Automatic Updates > Select the third option listed ("Notify me but...") > If
and when the Nvidia update is offered again, Hide it, ignoring any warnings
> Now install any other critical *security* updates (no Optional,

Recommended or Hardware updates) offered.

Experienced users *never* install any hardware or third-party software
updates offered by WU/AU.

Thanks for your reply.

I have already unchecked it so that autoupdates won't show it again however
whenever you go to windows update you get a nasty warning that you have
disabled a crtical update. That warning cannot be removed.

I have installed a later driver than the one that windows update insists is
critical. WU can't see that there is a newer driver already installed. If it
was offerred as an optional hardware update all would be OK but because it is
listed as a critical update it, annoyingly, can't be hidden away and
forgotten about.

OK thankyou for your help. I will probably just install the recommended
driver and leave it be.
