Driver won't install

I am running WinXP. Every time I go to Windows update, hardware updates says
I need to install "ESS Technology - Sound - ESS Maestro PCI Audio (WCM)"
driver. Invariably, after downloading the driver, it says that the update was
not installed. That's it. No indication of what's wrong or how to fix the
problem.

Any ideas how I can fix this?

*Never* get non-microsoft drivers from the Windows Update site.
Always go straight to the manufacturer's web page for the latest driver.

Well, then how do I get the driver not to appear when I run Windows Update,
and how do I clean my PC so as not to have a partial update on it?

Check the "do not show this update box" either when it asks to install with
automatic updates or when you go to the Windows Update site.

And installing the full driver from the manufacturer should get rid of the
partial install.
