Drives not found in System Restore

I'm working on a Toshiba Laptop Vista home premium sp1. When I open system
restore and click on to create a restore point no drives show up. All I see
is "searching".

My first clue to a problem is when I tried to install Vista sp2. The
computer was stuck on "creating restore point" After aborting the
installation of SP2 and rebooting the computer I tried to create one myself
and discovered the problem.

I don't know if I caused the problem or it was already there but here is
what was done prior to trying to install SP2.

I went to windows update and installed several updates except a security
patch for dotnet 1.1 would not install. after a lot of research I found
instructions and a tool that would remove dotnet 1.1 (author says MS is using
his tool). I removed dotnet 1.1, downloaded the network install of dotnet
1.1 and dotnet 1.1 sp1. I installed dotnet 1.1 and then dotnet 1.1 sp1.
Rebooted and then installed the security patch for dotnet 1.1. all went just
fine now. When I returned to windows update I was now prompted to install
Vista SP2. That installation had to be aborted after 5 hours of nothing. I
have no idea if System Restore was working OK or not prior to fixing dotnet
1.1 but I thought I should mention it.

Hi,

Is Symantec software installed on this system? If so, disable or remove it.
