I bought a Netgear wireless router today so I can hook up multipl
computers in my home. Problem is that when I hook everything accordin
to the -schematics it does not go as planned. I have a verizon ds
modem and before I hook up my router everything works (internet). Bu
when I connect my router I cannot get a connection at all. Any Advice
Also after I disconnected the router and connect just the dsl modem th
way it was before I cannot get a connection either. I tried reseting th
dsl box and I unhooked all the phone cords and ethernet cords an
restarted the computer and it is still a no go. I am so confused
cannot understand it. Thanks in advance for anyone that helps
Vista newbie

To start with the router has to be configured using a wired connection.
Usually the router's default configuration for the LAN ports, with DHCP
addressing enabled in the computer will automatically connect the computer
to the router. When Vista detects the new network set it as Private, not
Public.

Using IE browse to the router's configuration pages to set up the DSL
connection first. What's needed to know is how the DSL modem was configured
to connect to the ISP... does it autoconnect (username and password stored
in the modem) when you turn it on or is there a "dialer" configured in the
computer that sends username/password etc. to the ISP to make or terminate
the connection. How you set up the router will be different for each
scenario. If the computer was making the ISP connection then you have to
enter all of the appropriate information into the router's WAN settings so
that it can do that job instead. If the DSL modem connects to the ISP on its
own then the router WAN configuration needs to be set up to allow for that
scenario.

After you establish a connection to the ISP you then need to configure the
wireless settings in the router while still using a wired connection. Set up
the wireless channel, security type, passphrase etc. in the router and match
those wireless settings in each of the computers you want to connect. When
the new wireless connection is first detected by Vista make sure it is also
set as a Private network.

Configuring a router for DSL can be complicated. RalfG gave you some good
information, but here are a few additional points of detail.

- Verizon DSL in most (though not all) areas uses the PPPOE protocol. This
requires a log on which is usually configured in a saved modem profile if
there is no router. If a router is added, the modem generally needs to be
reconfigured and the the PPPOE logon set up in the router. It may
also be necessary to reconfigure the DSL modem for 'bridge mode.'
Some DSL modems are also routers and, if so, there is an alternative way
to configure the wireless router (as a WAP with switch) and connect the DSL
modem to a LAN port without changing the modem.

I suggest you call Verizon DSL support (800 567-6789). They will
certainly help you reconnect through your modem. (You probably deleted a
saved profile and log in) and may (if you're lucky and get a good tech) help
you add the router.
Otherwise you may want to get help locally. I have had made many a
service call to set up routers with Verizon DSL after home users were unable
to do so, and there's no shame in needing help with it. It's not all that
time consuming or expensive.
