Dual Boot with external usb Drive..

I am trying to Install WindowsXp in external usb HDD. I have Windows Vista
Business installed on my primary hard-disk's primary partition. While trying
to install, i can boot with CD and run the complete the first step of XP
Installation copying of the file. But after this when it Restarts.. shows an
error:

missing or currupt : <windows root>/system32/hal.dll

ayone has a solution to this. Please help me out. I have tryed installing
the OS in other machine and then boooting with that installation but then it
automatically restarts..

Please help if anyone have solution of this.

One Quick thing .. My Laptop supports the boot from USB HDD

Windows XP cannot be installed on an external drive.
It must be installed on an internal drive only.
