Do I need an AVG program installed on each HD?

I have been using AVG Free on C:\ - could I use Avast Free on D:\?

Do I need to install Spybot, AVG Spyware, and Ad-Aware on each HD?

While you can use AVG on C: to do on demand scans of D:,
if you want real-time/active scanning done while you are
using D:\ Vista Home Premium, you will need to install AVG
there, too. Go ahead and install the other security software, also.

Any harm in putting Avast on D:\ while leaving AVG on C:\?

In a multi-boot system, you are running separate operating systems. This
means that each operating system should have the necessary programs
installed in it exactly the same as if it were installed on a standalone
machine. So this means that yes, you need to install antivirus,
antispyware, and other desired programs on each operating system. There is
no reason why you can't use AVG free (although I really prefer Avast free)
on both computers. It is generally considered not a wise move to routinely
scan from one operating system to the other. Besides, you may wish to hide
the operating systems from each other since there are System Restore issues
with a dual-boot between XP and Vista.

Thank You Malke,

I have sys restore turned off on both HDs(both are Vista), I make daily back
up images of each HD with Acronis True Image.
After reading Michael's post, and now yours, I will put the spy/malware on
both HDs. I have been using AVG AV for a long
time, but I like the little rotating ball w/Avast :-)

You're welcome.

Dual-booting can be useful. However, I mostly run virtual machines
for any extra OS I wish to use or test.... that's something you might
want to look into as well.

I like the comfort of having 2 separate HDs. I use C:\Ultimate most of the
time. When I mess that up, which I do on a regular basis, I boot to Home
Premium (was XP until last week) and can get things done. I also keep an
image of both HDs on a 3rd HD. Acronis True Image is my friend ;-)

I for one, have learned a lot from this NG and am very happy with Vista.
