Someone posted on a forum I visit that a Vista upgrade will KO your XP
Certificate.

Anyone heard anything like that?

You'll need a "Full Version" Windows Vista license if you
wish to dual boot with an existing Windows XP installation.
A Vista upgrade license is only valid if you actually upgrade
an existing Windows XP installation to Windows Vista.

But you can then re-install XP on another partition, right?
Or clone the XP partition first...

Technically, yes. However, it would be in violation of the license.

Unless MS is now set up to cancel the XP product key on the activation
servers. They just might be, if not now, soon.

No. The OS license used to qualify for the upgrade edition is tied to the
upgrade edition. It cannot be transferred to another computer even if it
would be so qualified by itself.

Cloning the XP partition would get around that (again, from a technical,
not a license standpoint)

I think I see what you are getting at, but it might not help. If the Vista
installer runs a validation against the XP activation hash like everything
else coming out from MS now does, then the servers are still going to report
an invalid XP key. I assume that a phone activation would then be required.
I think the activation center operators will give an XP activation if the
user explains that he is in the process of recovering Vista. I don't know
where this is all headed but I do know that this stuff has already been
field tested quite apart from Vista. So far as I know, MS has the
capability but has not yet turned it on except in controlled tests.

A clone of an activated XP partition would not need to be reactivated,
so Microsoft's activation servers wouldn't be involved at all.

WGA might notice, should it decide to re-verify XP machines in the
future, but the activation system wouldn't know or care because it would
never be called.

(Again, from a technical point of view -- That doesn't make it within
the license)
