Dual-Booting: XP & Vista

With the rumor that on dual-boot systems, that booting onto XP will delete
all of my System Restore Points as well as my full system backup is a bit
frightening.

This was supposedly covered in the Missing Manual for Vista by Pogue.

Any truth to this?

So, everything is fine.....until I actually use the dual-boot! That's
ridiculous. Microsoft should be ashamed of itself! Time a fix to be
released and an apology to be issued!

There will probably not be a fix issued for it.
In Microsoft's view, there are not enough users
who dual-boot, therefor it's not a priority and
according to them, it would take a major rewrite
of XP's code to fix it.
There had been some statements that said it was
being considered, maybe included in SP3 for XP,
I wouldn't count it.

I really wouldn't count on an apology, either.

You can use a third party boot manager to hide
Vista's volume from XP, or if you have Vista Ultimate,
you can use BitLocker to protect Vista.

With all the hoopla (I have no idea where in the hell this thread is and
threads now seem to be breaking up into ectopic, metastatic single posts
regularly every day--why I have no idea) over restore points on a dual boot
why is it that people don't simply shortcut to the XP desktop from Vista and
then they can reach anything on XP with a single mouse click--exceptions
would be OE in XP from Vista but you can copy any messages or files you want
from it to the Vista desktop--and a few isolated folders like Pictures on XP
(easily copied to Vista desktop) sometimes Music folders on XP easily copied
to either WMP 11 on Vista or Itunes or both.

As Michael says MSFT ain't changin it--I've had that conversation with them
directly. and they sure as hell ain't apologizing for much of
anything--(contrary to the Apple commercials MSFT thinks they are the gift
to the planet). Remember that when MSFT first began negotiations over
turning Halo into a movie they early on demanded jet accomodations lol to
the opening--softies starved for parties? softies have a jones for
Hollywood hoopla? including how they would be fed and accomodated even
though the Softie Big Chief has many many jets at his disposal including
Gulfstreams and many ex-employies who got out with much stock have
Gulfstreams.

MSFT also has a problem getting outside onto the street and if you don't
think so, check out the stupidity of their error messages in Event Viewer
and the other ectopic, metastatic logs lol and the number of significant
events in Event Viewer for which there is no error message available on a
link either incomprehensible or in language real people use on the street.

I somehow don't fanthom the wives/girlfriends/both of the above of MSFT
developers and PMS talking Hex on their cells.

Hi Ross--

It's not a rumor. It's a fact.

Have you tried eliminating the problem of booting to XP if you don't have
Bit Locker or use one of the other workarounds like a 3rd party boot manager
(easily obtained) to simply shortcut from the Vista desktop to your XP
desktop. You can access almost anything that way with a click. This saves a
lot of time and real estate because you don't have to copy your time earned
XP files and folders to Vista (but you can copy whatever you like for
convenience.

Michael is correct. Not having received 10,000 phone requests to PSS this
is not an important problem.

Or you can change your multiboot setup to running in virtual machines.
I've done this with vista, linux, and solaris and the only problem I had
so far is not being able to use the eye candy in Feisty Fawn. And
it's nice not having to multiboot, any OS I want to go into is at my
fingertips.

VMs and the oft-cited "shortcutting" are incomplete solutions, not at all
addressing emergency situations when your host OS is borked or when you need
to use a piece of hardware that doesn't yet work in Vista.

Bitlocker is available only to the elite (and even then is disruptive and
overkill for most), and 3rd-party boot managers are still onerous roads that
few want to travel (BootIt NG in particular, which may be top-flight but
with its stripped-down geek chic is anything but a utility for the common
man).

As for those who have talked with "Microsoft" (as if Microsoft is a single
entity), which has allegedly flatly refused to ever solve this problem, and
those who've ascertained that PSS hasn't received a single call about it,
well, you may be right. But you may also be wrong. I still think MS--or
someone else--is going to find a new *workaround* for it, as opposed to a
full-blown solution, which would require too much work to be practical (e.g.
rearchitecting XP).
