Dual screens - one going off

Since SP1 (Vista Ultimate) when I am using my laptop screen and at the same
time a traditional LCD screen, periodically the LCD screen goes off (LED
inidcator also goes off) for 10-15 seconds then comes back on. The lapton
screen remains on. While this occurs I can hear the laptop hard drive doing
something... no idea what.
