I have a laptop with Vista. I want WinXP (Drivers are available from Dell)

Can I install WinXP on the same drive? Or does it _have_ to be on a
separate drive?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Provided you have enough free drive available you can shrink the Vist
primary down enough to see XP installed onto a second primary partition
Once you elect to proceed there are a few things to know first however

1)A 3rd party drive partitioning tool is advised to see the bes
results when going to resize the Vista primary. Backup anythin
important before starting from the drive

2)You will need to repair the Vista mbr(master boot record) once XP i
installed. The XP installer will replace the entries poiting to it's ow
boot loader. http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/91...tup-repair.htm

If the laptop came without any recovery disks you have the option t
see them created from the hidden recovery partition by following th
instructions seen in the user manual or at the manufacturer's suppor
site. You may have problems simply borrowing a disk from someone els
since that sees a branded preinstallation there

One option for downloadin a disk image only good for the repair tool
section is the 120mb iso disk image available at 'Windows Vist
Recovery Disc Download — The NeoSmart Files
(http://neosmart.net/blog/2008/window...disc-download/

Once Vista is starting normally after seeing the mbr performed you the
need to add the entry for XP into Vista's own boot loader(BCD file) b
one of two methods. The first is the command prompt option for the BC
editor included in Vista.

The second is a free 3rd party tool called EasyBCD available at th
same site as the repair tools disk image. 'Download EasyBCD 1.7.2
NeoSmart Technologies' (http://neosmart.net/dl.php?id=1) The genera
documentation for the free tool is seen at 'EasyBCD Documentation Hom
- NeoSmart Technologies Wiki

Depends. if you have a Recovery DVD for your machine (as opposed to a
genuine Vista DVD) then it's going to be almost impossible to set up a dual
(spelling - although your subject line might be a pun!) boot system, because
as you are supposed to install the earlier OS first, when you then boot from
the Recovery DVD it will wipe everything on the HDD out.

When first booting off of any recovery disk as well as a separate ful
version dvd right under the Install Now button you should see a link fo
the repair tools. You don't proceed with the installer but go into th
separate section.

If lacking you can also download and burn a repair tool disk from th
link posted earlier since that was made intentionally for both desktop
and laptops seen without the recovery disks included

For seeing XP added on after Vista that's done all the time.

Okay, thanks guys. Hopefully my partitions won't duel!
(But I'm thinking if I had any guts at all, I'd just wipe it clean and
install WinXP)

While installing XP you might end up Blue Screen due to SATA Drivers
Check if you are able to install xp normally if not then you need to lo
into BIOS and set the SATA mode to IDE or AHCI mode and procee
installation

If the laptop is under warranty you might want to reconsider that one.
By using a free drive tool like GParted to shrink the present primary
down enough XP would then go onto the second and see a working dusl boot
as long as you are able to restore the Vista mbr.

Once Vista is running you simply follow the guidelines for unhiding and
copying the XP boot files needed to the root of the Vista primary
followed with a fast edit of the Vista BCD to see XP as an option.

"InOverMyHead",
You need to consider how big your drive is? I am using approximately 30 gig
with Vista and same with windows xppro! Then you will want additional space
so as to be able to run disk dfrag , restore points, backups, or just adding
new applications? Hope this will help! Night Hawk gave you some excellent
links and advice good luck!
