Well, I've been frustrated and wasting time with WLM being screwed up for
over a week. What other videochat/IM programs are users recommending as an
alternative? Thanks for your replies.

Greetings,

I like Skype for some things, but it's not much of an IM application although it certainly
can be used that way and has some nifty functionality regarding text chats.

If you don't wish to abandon Messenger entirely, you can use aMSN, GAIM, or Trillian to
continue to use the same contact list just with another client with varying degree of webcam
and other features supported.

Just some thoughts, lots of options out there.

Are you using ZoneAlarm at the moment? If you are, then go check for updates
for your ZoneAlarm firewall. there is an update today, and it fixed my WLM
connection problem.

I used to use ICQ and Yahoo IMs and to be honest I think ICQ had more
vulnerabilities but the current version of Yahoo I have has some very
annoying "Issues". 90-100 % CPU usage for no apparent reason etc.

If you want voice and phone then Skype is the best so far, free calls all
over the US and for example US to UK is like 2c a minute, and you can also
use it as a phone for incoming calls and place you incoming number in any
country, so if you have relatives in the UK you can get a number that's
cheaper for them to call. I've quit leaving yahoo running for the time being
until this apparent problem is fixed.

Just my 2c, if you just want chat then may GAIM would suit you better.

Charlie

Greetings,

I'm glad none of you said AIM Triton, since that program is full of
vulnerabilities and buffer overflows. I dont know what happened with this
latest version of Yahoo! Messenger, I am experiencing the same memory
leakage issues.

I couldn't even download AIM Triton, but I guess it was a good thing I didn't!

I use Trillian to connect to Yahoo, AIM and my secondary MSN account, while
using Live Messenger for my main account. Not the best arrangement, I have
to admit, but it doeswork for me. I'm too poor at the moment (I'm a student)
to pay for the proper version of Trillian, butI want cam functionality, so
that's why I still have Live Messenger, plus I like having MSN plus, and a
plugin for Winamp that lets me show people what I'm playing...

Greetings,

Trillian is the best way to go in terms of using multiple IM services in one
program. There has been talk that AIM and Google talk are going to be
linking up there services, just like Yahoo! and Microsoft did, but who
really uses Google Talk?

Well, I kind of use Google Talk, but I mainly use Live Messenger, along with
AIM second, with Yahoo third. I'm sure Bill is happy about that one, hehe.
Anyway Google Talk still has its uses. I do like the feature of keeping the
logs online, as well as being able to message people via your Gmail account.
But, all this said, it wuldn't be my primary IM application to use. I barely
use Skype, though I do use a proram called Voipstunt. I'm usually always on
IRC however. Google talk is usually something I use to check when I get new
mail on my Gmail account, even if I do have a plugin for Firefox that does
the same...

Thanks, I'm trying Skype and I like it. I would prefer to have my Live
Messenger back, though. I've tried all of the posted "solutions"...the only
one I couldn't try was "deleting Policies" registry key..because I have no
such file/key in my registry. Why not? My main problem is that all my
contacts show "offline" and I can't add any contacts.

Hi Modoc,

You don't need to have any Policies there, Messenger adds it when required.

One thing you can do (or try) is to use MSN Messenger 7.5 to see if all your contacts appear
online there:
