tonight I got tww messages at different times. and both were the same one.
there were a couple of others that weren't going through from one of my
contacts to me. is there a reason for this? or is it because I have installed
the new messenger at different times and going back to the 2008 one.

Greetings Rage,

There are a variety of reasons why something like this might happen, especially if one or
both of you are currently in the "appear offline" status. If it doesn't continue or happen
again, you can simply just ignore it.

However, to directly answer your question, switching between the versions won't affect
messaging like this.

ok thats what I was wondering both of us were appearing online but they just
weren't getting through. I had no message cannot be delivered message it just
looked like it wen't through on my end but they didn't recieve it. it has
happened before but its not an ongoing thing its just sporadic for the most
part.

Hi,

Yes that would do it. Unfortunately when you're appearing offline (especially both of you),
messaging will be far less reliable as it has to be delivered via the offline messaging
service.
