Duplicate entries in Recent Items

Good Day,

I have duplicate items appearing in my Recent Items list. The duplicates
are confined to Microsoft Excel 2003, for example: x.xlr, x.xlr (2), x.xlr
(3), show up on the list. All other documents, opening in other programs, do
not appear as a duplicate items in the Recent Items list.

Any suggestions to correcting this? If I need to visit a different forum
for this issue, please let me know.
