hi
ok so i had not used my dvd drive in a while (oh yea it's a hp dv6824)
and the other day i tried to open it and it would open so i used a
paper clip and opened
closed it back . No response
so i restarted the machine , my drive no longer appears in my computer
or device manager, so after a few days of doing just about everything i
could think of including restoring to factory state, nothing worked the
drive would function while the machine booted but as it loaded vista it
stoped functioning instantly. i did the registry fix for the upper and
lower fix (itunes issues) nothing still
After getting throughly frustrated i removed the drive put it back and
still nothing
so i did a bios flash back to an older bios and magically it started
working again then i went to sleep and so did the machine
upon the machine resume it all disappeared again i tried the bios flash
once more to no avail

HELP ME PLEASE ANYONE:cry:
THANKS

Go into the BIOS as your computer boots. If you see the DVD drive listed
there it may still be alive.
However if the drive is getting power but will not open when you press the
eject button on the outside it is probably dead.
Presumably you made sure that cables are connected properly. If this is an
EIDE drive on its own cable often it has to be set as the master drive in
order to work. Check the instructions.
Since for reasons that are beyond me you entirely reinstalled the OS just
because of a defective optical drive then you have installed new DVD
drivers. Just to make sure go into control panel and delete the DVD drive
and reboot. If the OS can see the drive it will reinstall new drivers.
If all that does not solve the problem the drive is dead.
Nobody wants to spend money if they don't have to and times are tough but if
you have a standard computer case replacement DVD drives can be had for not
much more than $20 if you shop around.

the instant windows loads it goes dead it acts as though it does not
exsist in windows nothing in c/panel,device manager
it just does not exsist
but some reason wen i upgraded the bios f/ware it came back to life
full function and when the comptuer went to sleep an woke back up it was
all gone again just like b4 all traces of a dvd drive totally
disappeared except for bios at start

I had this problem and had to edit the reg. It has worked ever since. See

Microsoft Knowledge Base:

314060 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060/) You can no longer access
the CD drive or the DVD drive

As I have a service contract I called the tech people and was given this
instruction and now I have the drive back again
I was told to do this : -
Go to START - search - regedit
Then select : HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
select: SYSTEM
select: CURRENT CONTROL SET
select: CONTROL
select: CLASS
select the line that begins with: 4D36E965..etc
then look in the right hand pane for the line containing 'upper etc' and
DELETE this line
then exit the system edit
restart your system and the DVD/CD drive wll now be shown in the 'COMPUTER'
screen
THIS WORKS AS I HAVE DONE IT TWICE NOW

have you tried loading the bios back to default just like f9 then f10?
if no go, try deleting the upper filters and lower filters the
uninstall your i tunes
sometimes, i tunes can affect your DVD drive,
