Understood, but keep in mind that it only takes a small amount to cause that
problem, and the installation of Vista plus those programs would have been a
considerable amount of disk work.
Other things I would look at include checking for updated controller and
motherboard drivers from the board/system manufacturer, as well as any
firmware updates from the drive maker. It's also possible that the system
memory is in heavy use, not unusual after a fresh install, and there is a
lot of disk reading going on.
