Hi,

I have a DVD of some film I took on holiday and would like to put it onto my
computer in order to edit it and then copy it onto another DVD. Can anyone
tell me how I can get the DVD onto the computer.

I have Windows Movie Maker and Roxio software.

Thanks for all help.

I hope you can get your Roxio software to work. I certainly can't. I
would not take what their technical support say too seriously either.
They told me to upgrade the display driver to solve a problem of the
DVD rewriter not reading the DVD.

We need to work on your terminology a bit before suggestions can be made.
What do you mean by "I have a DVD of some film?" Did you use an actual
motion picture film camera or are you saying you took still pictures on film
and had them developed and delivered to you on a DVD? Are you saying film
when you really mean video? What format are the files on your DVD? .jpg,
..mov, etc etc.

The film was originally taken on a camcorder which was then copied onto a
DVD via my own DVD recorder. So, yes I should have said video.

The main file is VIDEO_TS.BUP and then within that there are 9 files on the
disc:
2 ending with .BUP
2 ending with .IFO
5 ending with .VOB

I am not very experienced with working with files, so I apologise for my
ignorance.

Bizarrely I am in a similar position. I have 16 mm cine film taken by
my grandfather. I had it transferred to a DVD. The DVD plays on the
computer but not on the DVD player. The files are .BUP .IFO and .VOB
I bought Roxio Copy and Convert and it won't recognise these files. It
just shuts down.

Do these files need to be converted and is Roxio supposed to be able
to do this? I am trying to burn a standard DVD-R disc.

I have a vcr/dvd writer combo connected to my TV. When I make a DVD, before
I can play it on another device I have to finalize it on my DVD/VCR combo
after completing my DVD copy. Check your manual to see if you have to do
that too.

Windows Movie Maker and Windows DVD Maker cannot directly import VOB files
as far as I have figured out. What I use is a program with a stupid name
that works very well called Magic DVD Ripper.

http://www.magicdvdripper.com/download.htm

You can rip to many different profiles that will be importable into your
editing software. If you do a search on DVD ripping software you will find
quite a few to choose from. High quality rips of DVD's take lots of
time......hours and hours.... so don't expect it to be a quick process. Set
it and walk away. But once finished you should have no difficulties working
with the resultant files.

I do on my equipment, but I did not make the DVD and my DVD player
won't recognise the disc let alone finalise it. I spoke to the guy
who made the disc and he says he doesn't really know but it worked
okay on his DVD player. He says that one of us will need to ask
around some more 'teccy' people and that since I now have the discs
and the DVD player I want them to play on it makes more sense for me
to do this. There is a possible legal argument but I prefer the
technical approach.

My first experience with a home theater type DVD recorder was similar. I
burned some discs that played fine on my burner but would not play anywhere
else. Realized that I had not finalized the discs. All that was needed was
for me to put the discs back in the recorder that made them and then
finalize. Take your discs back to the person who created them and ask him /
her to finalize them on the machine they were made on.

Good point, thanks. The problem is that he is in Devon and I am in
Scotland. I would prefer to do it electronically if I can - and to
make back-ups at the same time - but if I am stuck I will do as you
say.
