DVD-RW Capacity vs. Actual

I just burned some folders containing mostly JPG files (and a few AVI
files). The DVD has a capacity of 4.7GB - but it only held 2.4GB of
these folders - and the DVD is now full. Why didn't I get the full
4.7GB capacity. I used Nero 9 and chose the Write Data option.

This has what to do with Vista?

I don't know - but I also don't know where else to get an answer. Any
suggestions would be appreciated.

How many folders and/or files are in the root of the DVD drive? There may
be a limit there but I haven't got the facts and figures at hand presently.

You might also ask Nero support, found here:

Don't understand what you mean by folders and/or files in the root of
the DVD drive. This is the first time I've attempted to write to a DVD
so I'm a newbie. I'm using Nero 9. The capacity of the disk is 4.7GB
and everything I selected burned onto the DVD. However, when I right
click on the drive, it tells me that the drive used 2.37GB (and is 100%
full) and there are ZERO GB left. How do I tell how much capacity I
really have left on the disk? I don't believe that the disk is
absolutely full with what I burned to it (but maybe I'm wrong). I
placed a blank disk from the same package in the drive and it shows
4.7GB capacity.

When you burn anything DAO it doesn't matter if you're burning 4.7GB or
500MB worth of files. DAO, or for you moron, Disk At Once, closes out the
disc after burning. That's why it shows as full. When you first open Nero
you have the choice of Session At Once, if you want to add more files later,
or DAO, in which case the disk will be finalized and could be read on any
computer. Default is DAO. Now, moron, if you had gone to Nero's website
and checked their FAQ you would've already known this instead of wasting our
time. Come back when you're mature enough to shave.

Michael, I appreciate your answer (and have learned to take your
insults with a grain of salt). Don't forget, I'm quite a bit older
than you. Also, I will now look up DAO to further understand what it
means. I never heard that acronym before. FYI, I find Nero 9 not user
friendly and have had difficulty finding the answers I'm looking for.
In any case, I DO know that you're supposed to close out a Write only
disk when you're done - but I never thought that was done with a
re-writable disk - so it never occurred to my feeble mind to look it
up. I thought I was doing something wrong. That being said, before I
got your reply, I deleted everything on that disk (just as if it were a
floppy) without being prompted to "un-close" the disk. Then, I rewrote
the same folders and, of course, got the same results. Now, since the
disk is "closed out," do I have to do something to add more data on it.
I'm sure this is a moronic question - but you're very helpful. While I
wait for your (amusing) reply, I'll try to find the answer myself (you
made my morning). But with the pain in my head (you remember I told
you about this), I have trouble concentrating. Perhaps I used a
different Persona for this posting. Thanks for your help Michael -
always appreciated. And, I probably am a moron. So what????? Nothing
I can do about it - I've been to every doctor, hospital and clinic from
the east coast to the west coast and they can't find a cause for the
pain. I really do look forward to your reply.....

Bob

Michael, I really DO try to find answers before I post a question.
