The hard drive in my dell Inspiron 1525, running Vista Home Basic (32
bit) failed last week and I was provided a replacemnt hard drive by dell
the next day. However after reinstalling windows and Ubuntu (the system
is a dual boot), I installed all the vista drivers including the latest
firmware for the dvd writer, the firmware seemed to install properely.
If however I try to reinstall the firmware, I just get the message, no
compatible drive detected.
The DVD writer is detected and fully functional in Ubuntu, so it it
purely a Vista issue.
..
I have called dell, however their tech support does not seem to be
able to solve the problem.
If I go to my computer, the DVD writer is detected twice as: CD
Drive(E

and CD Drive(F

, it is able to read both Cd's and DVD disks.
Nothing will however recognise it as a DVD writer. Vista does not allow
wrting to it, ImgBurn does not recognsise any writers nor does TMPGenc.
When examining the registry entries, it is classed as a CDROM, surely
this is wrong, it it possible to manually alter the registry entries so
that the DVD writer will be recognised, it is recognised as PBDS DVD +-
RW DS-8W1P ATA Device in device manager.
Here are the registry entries relating to it, (I have already deleted
the Upper and Lower filters, which did not correct the problem) :
