DVDMaker results distorted

I have two 25 minute-long MPGs that I want to write to a DVD so I can play
them in my DVD player. I add them to DVDMaker and add a menu. Everything
looks fine in the preview. I burn the disc. When I play the disc, I can see
everything but the picture is completely covered with a green checkerboard
pattern. Can anyone give me any hints on what to do to fix this?

This is something I used to do under Windows XP using Pinnacle Studio 9 with
no problem. Unfortunately, Studio 9 no longer works with Vista and I don't
want to pay for an upgrade to a much bigger program that might not work
either.
