This problem may occur if some CD recording programs from Roxio Easy CD Creator is installed on the computer, and if the version of the CD recording program is not compatible with Windows XP.

Hi there,
This happens quite often if one of the third-party packages has been uninstalled. They add references in the Registry for modules which they use, and these references fail to be removed, leaving Windows unable to find the files apparently needed for CD devices at the next boot. There is a simple Registry patch to correct this (download it aumha.org/downloads/cdgone.zip. Before using the patch, be sure to back up the Registry. After using the patch and rebooting, the drives should reappear. Any third party package that is still required will then need to be re-installed. This problem also may arise if there is underlying trouble with the Input-Output system of the machine: for example, interactions with controllers like Promise or Highpoint, or with special drivers. It may be worth trying a change in the DMA settings for the device in Control Panel | System | Hardware | Device Manager. Under IDE controllers, double click on the Primary or Secondary IDE Channel concerned, then click the tab for the Advanced Settings page. thankyou for both of your prompt replies
I should have also mentioned that I have a CDRW connected on the same IDE controller that works fine. Peter, I have not had roxio installed since installing XP late last year and I have reformatted twice since then I am currently using Nero for burning and have not had any issues until recently Michel, My problem is intermittent, the device is available at the moment As I belatedly noted at the top of this post, I have a CDRW working correctly all of the time, I believe this may make your initial suggestion unlikely in my case ? with your second suggestion both optical devices are connected to the Secondary IDE Channel Device 0 (CDRW) has a current transfer of Ultra DMA mode 2 Device 1 (DVDRW - Problem device) has a current transfer of Ultra DMA mode 4 I was initially hoping to peg this back to Ultra DMA mode 3 to attempt to rectify the issue, but, the only adjustment available is changing the Transfer mode back to PIO is this what you are suggesting ? Thankyou Shan --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "realcestmoi" wrote: > Hi there, > > This happens quite often if one of the third-party packages has been > uninstalled. Hallo Shane,
Try putting your DVD writer in Ultra DMA mode 2 and remove UDF reader as well since that is used to formatwre-writable cd's and Xp handles that well by its self. Thankyou Michel !!
I dont appear to be able to change the DMA mode, although it can most likely be done through the registry I uninstalled "Ulead Straight to disc SDK" and the problem seems to be resolved (3 restarts - all good) not even sure how or why it was installed in the first place After everything I have tried, I was starting to believe it was something obvious, which is often the case. Thankyou again - keep up the great work - very much appreciated Shane "realcestmoi" wrote: > Hallo Shane, > > Try putting your DVD writer in Ultra DMA mode 2 and remove UDF reader as > well since that is used to formatwre-writable cd's and Xp handles that well > by its self. > > Best regards, > Michel Denie > > "shanemail" <> wrote in message > news:B4E39A95-4451-4B0F-BF3E-... > > thankyou for both of your prompt replies > > > > I should have also mentioned that I have a CDRW connected on the same IDE > > controller that works fine. > > > > Peter, > > I have not had roxio installed since installing XP late last year > > and I have reformatted twice since then > > I am currently using Nero for burning and have not had any issues until > > recently > > > > Michel, > > My problem is intermittent, the device is available at the moment > > As I belatedly noted at the top of this post, I have a CDRW working > > correctly all of the time, I believe this may make your initial suggestion > > unlikely in my case ? > > > > with your second suggestion > > both optical devices are connected to the > > Secondary IDE Channel > > Device 0 (CDRW) has a current transfer of Ultra DMA mode 2 > > Device 1 (DVDRW - Problem device) has a current transfer of Ultra DMA mode > > 4 > > I was initially hoping to peg this back to Ultra DMA mode 3 to attempt to > > rectify the issue, but, the only adjustment available is changing the > > Transfer mode back to PIO > > is this what you are suggesting ? > > > > Thankyou > > Shane > > --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- > > > > > > > > "realcestmoi" wrote: > > > >> Hi there, > >> > >> This happens quite often if one of the third-party packages has been > >> uninstalled. So much for that, the issue has returned....... again
Just wondering if it is safe to delete all of the UDF files, there is about 15 of them 4 of these are in the NERO folder the rest are in sytem32 although some of these are Wudf - not sure if they are the same thing. As to changing the Ultra DMA Mode, as I have mentioned it appears to be impossible through device manager. I will have a look in the registry at some stage. PS: Ulead Straight to disc SDK has not returned thanks shane ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ "realcestmoi" wrote: > hello Shane, > > you are most welcome. > > Glad it solved your problem. > > Best regards, > Michel Denie > > "shanemail" <> wrote in message > news:0A205DA2-6BFC-4508-9434-... > > Thankyou Michel !! > > > > I dont appear to be able to change the DMA mode, although it can most > > likely > > be done through the registry > > I uninstalled "Ulead Straight to disc SDK" and the problem seems to be > > resolved > > (3 restarts - all good) > > not even sure how or why it was installed in the first place > > After everything I have tried, I was starting to believe it was something > > obvious, which is often the case. > > > > Thankyou again - keep up the great work - very much appreciated > > Shane > > > > "realcestmoi" wrote: > > > >> Hallo Shane, > >> > >> Try putting your DVD writer in Ultra DMA mode 2 and remove UDF reader as > >> well since that is used to formatwre-writable cd's and Xp handles that > >> well > >> by its self. > >> > >> Best regards, > >> Michel Denie > >> > >> "shanemail" <> wrote in message > >> news:B4E39A95-4451-4B0F-BF3E-... > >> > thankyou for both of your prompt replies > >> > > >> > I should have also mentioned that I have a CDRW connected on the same > >> > IDE > >> > controller that works fine. > >> > > >> > Peter, > >> > I have not had roxio installed since installing XP late last year > >> > and I have reformatted twice since then > >> > I am currently using Nero for burning and have not had any issues until > >> > recently > >> > > >> > Michel, > >> > My problem is intermittent, the device is available at the moment > >> > As I belatedly noted at the top of this post, I have a CDRW working > >> > correctly all of the time, I believe this may make your initial > >> > suggestion > >> > unlikely in my case ? > >> > > >> > with your second suggestion > >> > both optical devices are connected to the > >> > Secondary IDE Channel > >> > Device 0 (CDRW) has a current transfer of Ultra DMA mode 2 > >> > Device 1 (DVDRW - Problem device) has a current transfer of Ultra DMA > >> > mode > >> > 4 > >> > I was initially hoping to peg this back to Ultra DMA mode 3 to attempt > >> > to > >> > rectify the issue, but, the only adjustment available is changing the > >> > Transfer mode back to PIO > >> > is this what you are suggesting ? > >> > > >> > Thankyou > >> > Shane > >> > --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- > >> > > >> > > >> > > >> > "realcestmoi" wrote: > >> > > >> >> Hi there, > >> >> > >> >> This happens quite often if one of the third-party packages has been > >> >> uninstalled. Hello Shane,
The UDMA settings you have to chanche under the ide controller not the cd rom devices settings. If you uninstalled udf reader the proper way it should be fine if not reinstall it and uninstall it the proper way.
