E-mail will not download through ActiveSync unless first marked as Unread in Outlook, OWA or OMA

Hi,

I have a somewhat strange situation. I have an MS SBS Server 2003 with SP1,
which also runs MS Exchange.

We have some users with Pocket PC's, who try to ActiveSync to Exchange to
download messages in their Inbox.

E-mails arrive normally in Outlook 2003, Outlook Web Access (OWA) and
Outlook Mobile Access (OMA), but the strange part is that e-mails don't sync
across automatically through ActiveSync.

To get e-mails to come across to the Pocket PC, we have to first open up any
of the above listed MS Outlook types, read the e-mail, and then mark it as
Unread, after which the e-mail will arrive in the Inbox through ActiveSync.
This has to be done for every single e-mail.

I've tried this with two separate Pocket PC's, both having been tried with
Active Sync 3.8 and 4.1.0, and the problem exists for all cases. I've also
tried soft resets on both Pocket PC's.

Below are the software versions that we have on the network.

Microsoft Windows Server 2003 for Small Business Server

Service Pack 1

Microsoft Exchange

6.5.7226.0

Pocket PC

4.20

ActiveSync

4.1.0

If anyone has seen or heard of this problem before, and knows how to avoid
the "Mark Unread" step, so that e-mail can be downloaded directly through
ActiveSync to the Inbox, I'd greatly Appreciate any information on how to
fix it. Thank you.

That doesn't sound normal. Can you try installing SP2 for Exchange?
You can install SP2 on SBS without any adverse effects - and will gain
all the functionality in SP2 (there are quite a few, including a much
larger message database store - up to 75GB from 16GB with a few
registry entry changes, integrated intelligent message filter for spam
filtering, etc.)

If you do a manual sync, does it show up in the Inbox on the device?
Or does it not show up at all until you mark it as unread?

Hi Rob,

Thanks for your reply.
I'll try installing Exchange SP2 next week. I've tried manual syncs, and I
still have the same problem.

I just found this post and disabling etrust 7.1 scanning of email fixed it
for me as well. Can you explain how you changed etrust to only scan incoming
mail so I can resolve this issue safely without disabling the AV protection
for my other email users?
