E Mail Notification of Update

Just wondering if anyone else has gotten and knows if an email saying Windows
is advising of a critical update. I run updates whenever notified, but never
because of an e mail. Is this legite?

If you subscribe to the MS security bulletins, you can indeed get
notifications from MS. If you didn't subscribe, and/or if the e-mail claims
to have a 'patch' attached, it's a virus. Delete it - but keep your AV
software updated & scanning mail, too.
