How to Edit Notification icons

Using Vista Business. Would like to manage or at least edit my notification
icons. Have many "historical" ones that should never have been there and
would like to remove them. I'm about to drill down through the registry but
maybe there is a better way. Even better, any suggestions for a utility to
be able to manage them? Thanks.

Many notification icons can be removed by right clicking the
notification icon and selecting Exit, Close or Quit. Some have program
settings or preferences that control whether or not they are displayed
in the notification area. Others, you might want to uninstall the
program entirely.

Sometimes, you might not want to uninstall the program, but remove it
from Startup. Go to Start, run msconfig.exe, on the Startup tab
uncheck the boxes of the programs you do not want to run at Startup.
Many of those programs also have settings where you could deselect run
at Startup in order to remove them entirely from the Startup list.

Personally, I'd prefer to do things through each application's
settings than hack the registry for this type of thing.

Many thanks. Did exactly what was needed. Had about 30 "historical" items
that couldn't be removed because they were not associated with a program.

Thanks for your input. My real problem is with the old "historical" icons
that programs are no longer active or even installed.
