They will tell you to do a complete reinstall for any issue, including minor
sleep issues with known fixes. Google works circles around them and makes
them useless on everything. Why do they even exist except to sell you up?
Phone support is slightly better but chat is a total joke on any issue large
or small. I am a newspaper writer and am working on a story about this and
would like to hear your experiences.

what do you mean chat is a total joke?
If you are a newspaper writer you should try to express yourself more
clearly?

What exactly do you want us to tell you?

apparently there are many emachines..

so please clarify what you mean

It's not just emachines. I entered chat support to get help on my Sony VAIO
notebook not being offered SP1. They advised that I defrag the disk and try
again. WTF? Later I found that it was some VAIO drivers (listed in the SP1
MS information) that was the cause. You'd think the notebook manufacture
would know that eh...?

Please, no advice on what to do now. I've already taken care of it.

You're talking to low paid first-tier customer support that doesn't know
anything (or they'd be paid more). They have a list of complaints and fixes
and the last fix on their list is a reinstall for all other problems. Ask
to talk with their supervisor.

Is there a Vista related question hidden in this post?

When you buy the bottom of the barrel machine, what do you expect?
