Alright I need some computer people out there to please help out a total
computer idiot! I've been trying to send word files to organizations I work
with that I have typed on my Windows Vista word and when they try to open it
on there computers (they don't have Vista as most companies seem to not),
they are unable to open the attachment. Is this an issue with Vista not
being compatible or am I just an idiot and messing something up! PLEASE HELP
ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !

Amy

It is possible you are using Word 2007 and they are using Word 2003.
Look at the documents you are sending are they .doc or .docx at the end of
the filename?
If they docx then these are 2007 version files and you need to save them a
doc - a 20903 version.
So open them in Word and press the Office icon in the top left of the screen
and select Save As Word 97-2003.

If this is not the problem then I am not sure.

This is NOT a Vista problem. You must be using Office 2007 that saves
documents in the DOCX format.
Just open the document and do a Save As in the older DOC format and send
that document.

It depends how you save and then send the document as an attachment.
Word like other word processors is capable of saving the document with
all your fancy formatting. HOWEVER unless the person you sent it to
ALSO has Word then they not only won't see the fancy formatting, they
may not be able to open the document. A simple fix is to save and send
your documents as simple .txt files. While not pretty, at least nearly
anybody can open and read them. A better choice if you're tying to
reach businesses would be Adobe's PDF format. While not all businesses
especially very small ones don't use PDF, most larger companies do.

Read this:

http://www.goldmark.org/netrants/no-word/attach.html

So basically sending a Word document blind hoping the person on the
other end will be able to read it is pretty much like writing the
document in Japanese. You're assuming a BIG risk and only making
yourself look amateurish.

Yes it is, it is a new format created to inconvenience the users of
other systems, it is part of Microsoft's attempts to FORCE everybody to
switch to Vista, and that ain't going to happen as you shills know only
too well. It may well result in users switching, but not to Vista

You may well be attached to Redmond by an umbilical cord but not
everbody wants to be. This is an unwise business decision and simply
invites more law suits like the recent EU suit.

No it is NOT a Windows Vista Problem - it IS a format change that is
available in the latest Office suite.
The use of Office 2007 has nothing to do with trying to force anyone to run
anything new since it works on XP too.
Maybe you should just check your paranoia at the door before posting here.

More like MS trying to force everyone to use Office 2007, not Vista.
After all, Office is much more expensive and adds a lot more cash to
Redmond's treasury than Hasta la Vista, Baby ever will. Vista Ultimate
Retail goes for over 800 US dollars and Office 2007 Pro Retail goes for
over 900 US dollars. In either case, it's a stone, cold rip off.

One can only assume that you are using Word 2007, which saves files using
the default .docx file extension, and the people you are sending the
attachments to are using Word 2003 or earlier, which uses the .doc file
extension.

The simple remedy to this problem is, when you initially save the document
you have created, use the 'save as' option and then select to save the
document in Word 97- 2003 file format. The file will then have the .doc file
extension appended to the file.

The default format in Word can be 'set' to .doc; the same as has been the
norm for the past 108 years.

Save As, Select "Word options", from the drop down menu select Save, set
Save files in this format: select Word 97-2003 (*.doc). Click OK!

And mayhaps you likewise should pull your head out from Steve Ballmer's
